What is fueling your commitments?
Fall-time is “sign-up season” – and in this community, options abound for joining clubs and activities, engaging in sports and community service.
Ecclesiastes chapters 1-2 urge us to be aware of what fuels our commitments. Some chase a dream of competence, believing the smartest person in the room is the happiest. Others seek pleasure or money or fame – but, having tried them all, this sage testifies that they lead to “vanity” and “emptiness.”
Here’s the good news: Instead of chasing a ‘life project’ – try resting in the sturdy works of God. Like today’s sunrise, or the change of seasons around you – rejoice in these gifts, and you tap into a joy beyond striving. And that’s worth signing up for.
